The name of this organization shall be The Teachers College Alumni Society of Ball State University hereafter referred to as “Society”.
Section 1. The purpose of the Society shall be to stimulate the interest and support of all graduates and former students of Ball State University who were enrolled in any educator preparation program or have been actively engaged in the field of education and furthering the educational, professional, and social interest of the Teachers College collectively by:
a. Developing a wider acquaintance and fellowship between the members of the Society and the professional education faculty of the University.
b. Serving in an advisory and support capacity with regard to programs in education and other human service fields that mutually benefit the alumni, students and the University.
c. Taking appropriate action when needed for the continued improvement of the education professions and providing input into the professional offerings and services of the Teachers College.
d. Inspiring a greater devotion, loyalty and appreciation towards the Teachers College, its culture and traditions, and what it has to offer at the state and national levels.
Membership of the Society
Section 1. Membership in the Society shall be limited to former students who were enrolled in educator preparation programs at Ball State University, current and former administrators and faculty of the Teachers College, and others who have made significant contributions towards the education profession and who will enhance the mission of the Teachers College. By a majority vote of the Society’s Board a non-alumni may become a member of the Society.
Section 2. Active membership in this Society is accorded to members who have financially supported the Teachers College with a gift to the Ball State University Foundation during the current year.
Section 1. Membership on the Governing Board
a. The Dean of the Teachers College
b. Ten active members of the Teachers College Alumni Society
c. A faculty representative from the Teacher College
d. A representative from the Office of Alumni Programs
Section 2. Selection
a. The Dean of the Teachers College (ex officio)
b. The faculty representative from the Teachers College is appointed by the Dean of the Teachers College.
c. The ten members to the Society Board are elected at large by the members of the Board. (An attempt should be made to maintain a balanced cross section of Society membership as well as geographical regions where Society members reside.)
d. The Alumni Programs Representative is appointed by the Executive Director of the Ball State University Alumni Association.
e. The Society Board is empowered to fill vacancies of unexpired terms of board members and/or officers. The President in consultation with the Dean of the Teachers College will recommend the replacement to the Board. The appointment shall be approved by a majority vote of the board members present.
f. All elected officers shall take office on January 1 following their election.
Section 3. Term of Office
a. Dean of the Teachers College (ex officio)
b. Faculty representative - two years with a limit of six consecutive years
c. Ten at large board members:
(1) two-year terms with a limit of six consecutive years on the board
(2) five board members are elected in even-numbered years and five board members are elected in odd-numbered years
d. The Alumni Program Representative (ex officio)
Section 1. The officers of the Society Board shall be President, Vice President, Secretary, and Alumni Council Representative.
a. The President shall be elected annually by the majority vote of the Board and shall preside at all board meetings of the Society. The President shall work with the Dean of Teachers College in the general supervision of all work of the board.
b. The Vice President-elect shall be elected annually by the majority vote of the Board and preside in the absence of the President and assist the President in any other way necessary.
c. The Secretary shall be elected annually by the majority vote of the Board and will work with the Alumni Association Programs Representative in recording and keeping the minutes of all meetings.
d. The Alumni Council Representative shall serve for a term of two years on the Ball State University Alumni Council representing the interests of the Society.
Meetings and Agendas
Section 1. There shall be a minimum of one meeting annually of the Society Board. Meetings will be held on or near the campus and called by the Society Board President in consultation with the Alumni Programs Representative and the Dean of the Teachers College.
Section 2. The agenda for all Board meetings will be determined by the President of the Society in consultation with the Alumni Programs Representative and the Dean of the Teachers College. The agenda will be sent to all board members a minimum of two weeks prior to the meeting.
Section 3. Any general meeting of the Society will be presided over by the President of the Society in consultation with the Alumni Programs Representative and the Dean of Teachers College.
Society Board Committees Duties
Section 1. The President of the Society in in consultation the Alumni Programs Representative and the Dean of Teachers College shall appoint all committees. The committees include the Nominating Committee, the Budget Committee, the Scholarship Committee, the Outstanding Alumni Awards Committee and the Innovative Education Grant Committee. Other committees shall be established as deemed necessary by the Society Board.
Section 2. All committees will meet at least annually to perform their duties.
a. The Nominating Committee will propose a candidate to the Board for the position of the Alumni Council Representative.
b. The Budget Committee in cooperation with the Dean of Teachers College will develop an annual budget to be presented to the Board for approval.
c. The Scholarship Committee will review all scholarship applications and make recommendations to the Society Board for its approval.
d. The Outstanding Alumni Awards Committee will review all candidate applications and make recommendations to the Society Board for its approval.
e. The Innovative Education Grant committee will review all applications and make recommendations to the Society Board for its approval.
Section 1. The Constitution and Bylaws of the Society may be amended provided the amendment or amendments shall be introduced at a Society Board meeting and receive a two-thirds vote of the board.
