Software Policies and Procedures

How many copies can I buy?
You may purchase only one copy of each version of software due to the contract agreement.

Can I get free copies of the Microsoft software?
Many software titles can be downloaded at no charge at www.bsu.edu/msdownload. If you wish to have an original installation disk, those are sold for a nominal fee at the Computer Store.

What is the difference between Microsoft Office and Windows Vista?

Microsoft Office includes such programs as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. Windows Vista is the operating system for your computer and determines how your computer is set up and run. These are two separate programs and are NOT interchangeable.

Does Microsoft Office come already installed on my computer?
The full version of Microsoft Office is typically not pre-installed. Your computer may be equipped with a trial version of Microsoft Office, but will be de-activated after a certain period of time.

Do I have to uninstall the trial version of Microsoft Office before I install the full version?
Yes. You must uninstall the trial version first. Otherwise, the Microsoft Office disk will not work.

How can I get Windows Vista off of my old computer and onto my new one?
If you have purchased a new computer and need to transfer your VISTA license and software to your new computer, you will to contact Microsoft's Vista activation line for assistance at 1-866-740-1256.

Can you ship the software to me so I can have it before school starts?
No. Shipping is available only for distance education students. Please contact the School of Extended Education if you are a distance education student needing software shipped.

Can you install the software for me?
The Computer Store does not install software. If you need help, you can make an appointment with TechTime or visit the iCare Corner. TechTime provides assistance for both Windows and Mac computers. The iCare Corner specializes in supporting Mac computers.

I am a faculty member who wants my students to purchase a particular software program for my course. How do I ensure it will be in stock at the Computer Store?
Please note that some software titles, while in stock, may be limited in quantity. Faculty members who are going to require a software title for course work should check with the Computer Store in advance to ensure that adequate numbers of copies are available for all students in the course. Advance coordination with the Computer Store will ensure enough time to order any additional copies that are needed.
