Kick Start Your Resolution the Right Way

Many diet companies will try to entice those trying to lose weight in the New Year by promising a lot of results in a short amount of time and an unhealthy manner.  These “quick fix” diets often set us up for failure because they are simply a quick fix and the weight tends to come right back.  It is important to remember, the only way to ensure healthy, permanent and lifelong weight loss is through a lifestyle change of better nutritional habits and physical activity.

Small Changes Can Make a Difference

Change can be made in small steps and still prove to be helpful.  Soft drinks are the single biggest source of calories in the American diet, with each containing around 150 calories.  A few soft drinks a day can start to add up to a large portion of one’s daily calorie intake.  These calories provide no nutritional value and no energy to help get through the day.  Cutting 300 liquid calories from your daily diet translates into about a 20-30 pound weight loss in one year!  Try switching to water with lemon, carbonated water, or unsweetened iced tea.

Exercise Can Be Everywhere

If work and family life leave you little time to have a full 30 minute workout at the gym, there are still ways to incorporate physical activity into your day. Research shows that three 10 minute spurts of physical activity can be just as beneficial as one 30 minute workout session.  Try taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, park your car in the furthest space from your office building and walk the extra way; also, if you have extra time on your lunch hour, take a walk with co-workers.  Every little bit of change can be beneficial in helping to reach a weight loss goal!
