Mobile Devices FAQ

Windows Mobile Smart Phones and Apple iPhones

The steps for setting up a Windows Mobile Smart Phone or Apple iPhone to access your Ball State exchange (Outlook) e-mail account can vary depending on your device. The two types of communication protocols that are supported for connecting to your Ball State exchange (Outlook) e-mail account are IMAP and ActiveSync. Your mobile device provider should be able to tell you which protocol your device uses and how to set it up. Below are the Ball State specific details you will need for the set up.

     IMAP Settings

If the device you have uses IMAP, you will need to specify an incoming and outgoing mail server. The incoming server for Ball State’s exchange accounts is imap.bsu.edu. The outgoing server is smtp.bsu.edu

    ActiveSync Settings

If your device uses ActiveSync, the server is activesync.bsu.edu

Blackberry

The way you access your Ball State exchange (Outlook) e-mail on your Blackberry depends on your data plan. Please carefully read the information below to determine which plan you will need.

     Ball State-subsidized Blackberry

If the university has provided you with a Blackberry or your department provides you with a PDA allowance, then you may be eligible to receive a Blackberry Enterprise Data Plan (BES) on the university’s Blackberry server. To learn more, contact Telephone Services at 765-285-8417.

Personally owned Blackberry (without a PDA allowance)

To access your Ball State exchange (Outlook) e-mail account on a personally owned Blackberry, that is not Ball State-subsidized, requires that you purchase a Blackberry Internet Service plan (BIS) from your Blackberry provider. If you have a BIS plan, you will be able to get your Ball State exchange (Outlook) e-mail delivered to the Blackberry but will have to connect your Blackberry to your computer to sync your calendar and contacts.
