Research Projects and Lab Classes
Protocols for research projects and lab classes conducted at Ball State University involving infectious agents or materials must be registered with the Institutional Biosafety Committee prior to using the infectious materials:
The Principal Investigator or course director should submit a protocol through IRBNet at least three weeks before the proposed project is to begin.
The Institutional Biosafety Committee will review the completed form and may make recommendations to the investigator regarding biosafety practices.
Ordinarily, separate forms should be submitted for each different infectious agent, but in cases where several infectious agents are handled and contained in a similar manner, a single protocol form listing all of those agents will suffice.
Submission of a protocol form provides registration for the use of the infectious agent(s) for up to three years, at which time an updated form should be submitted.
If the investigator intends to significantly alter or modify the way a previously registered infectious agent is used, a new protocol form should be completed and submitted.
Student investigators seeking grant funding for research involving the use of infectious agents do not need to submit a protocol form if a faculty advisor has previously registered the procedures to be used. This registration by a faculty supervisor is strongly recommended, especially when the student project is part of ongoing research in the faculty advisor's lab. Otherwise, the student investigator must submit his/her own protocol form.
