Suspicious E-mail

Suspicious e-mails can hit your inbox in several forms. You may get an e-mail telling you your e-mail account will be shut down if you do not reply with personal information such as your Social Security number, a Ball State password, or an account number.

Or, you may get an e-mail with a clickable link. By simply clicking the link, you could unknowingly be loading malicious software onto your computer.

Most suspicious e-mails can be broken down into the following:
  • phishing e-mails
  • pharming e-mails

Educating yourself about both processes can dramatically increase your chances of spotting and deleting these e-mails before they do any damage.

If you have a question about whether an e-mail is legitimate, you may forward it to abuse@bsu.edu.

If you have questions about spam and how to deal with it, read about our enhanced spam filtering.
