Professor of Social Foundations of Education Higher Education
Dr. Thalia M. Mulvihill, Professor of Social Foundations and Higher Education, and an Affiliate Faculty member in the Women's & Gender Studies Program and the Honors College, currently serves as the Director of the Adult, Higher and Community Education Doctoral Program, and two Certificate Programs (College & University Teaching and Community College Leadership). Dr. Mulvihill holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations of Education and Curriculum (Syracuse University) an interdisciplinary degree with a focus in History and Sociology of Education/Higher Education and a Concentration in Gender and Education Studies. She also holds two Certificates: (1) Gender and Education Studies and (2) Qualitative Research. Her MA is in Higher Education Research/Student Affairs Administration. (Syracuse University), and she earned dual degrees as an undergraduate in American Studies and Secondary Social Studies Education, (Syracuse University). Before arriving at Ball State University she served in the Office of Residence Life and the Counseling Center at Syracuse University.
Her areas of Research and Teaching include Qualitative Research Methods, Innovative Pedagogies, and History & Sociology of Higher Education with a focus on women and gender issues. Some areas of special interest include: 1.) life histories/narratives of women educators, including deans of women, women college and university presidents, and women coaches 2.) graduate student education with a focus on curriculum development for future professors and student affairs administrators, 3.) qualitative research methods, 4.) critical theory and pedagogies that focus on democracy and social justice issues, including conflict resolution/group development strategies, popular culture, and educational issues related to interscholastic and intercollegiate athletics, 5.) cultural studies and internationalizing the curriculum.
Research: Dr. Mulvihill has produced over 45 refereed journal articles and book chapters, 60 refereed conference research papers, 70 invited presentations/training sessions, and has served on over 70 dissertation committees and 60 university, college and dept. committees. Recent journal publications appear in Journal of Applied Research in the Community College, International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, Journal of College Student Development, Journal of Educational Technology, Journal of Educational Alternatives, Teachers College Record, Journal of Educational Psychology, Innovate, The Teacher Educator, Academic Exchange Quarterly, Educational Research and Reviews, New Proposals: Journal of Marxism and Interdisciplinary Inquiry,Vitae Scholasticae, Journal for the Study of Sports and Athletes in Education.
