Purchasing a Computer

What kind of computers do you sell?

We sell Lenovo and Apple computers. We carry laptop and desktop computers. We currently carry only the Apple iMac desktop computer. All others are laptops.

What computer do I need for my major?

You should check with your department to see what they recommend since departments recommend different computers. Education majors are the only ones who are required to have a MacBook. Remember that not all departments require that students purchase a computer.

Do I need to get a Mac?

No. We offer both Mac and PC computers. The only major that requires the purchase of a MacBook computer are education majors. Check with your department to see what they recommend.

I am a teaching major.  Why do I have to buy a MacBook?

Teaching majors can find that information from the Teachers College Web site at: http://www.bsu.edu/teachers/laptops.

Why is the price different between the Technology Store and Apple?

The Technology Store's price on MacBook Pro computers includes a 3-year AppleCare Protection Plan. You may purchase a computer from Apple without the AppleCare Protection Plan, but any maintenance will not be covered under the warranty. Apple education pricing is up to 10% off of retail Apple pricing.

Do I have to buy my computer at the Technology Store?

No. We offer special educational discounts on our computers. You are free to shop where you choose. We provide our services as a convenience to our Ball State students and employees.

Are there any discounts for students on computers?

Yes. We offer upto a 10% discount on Apple MacBook computers. Additional discounts are offered on other items such as software.

What else do I need to purchase along with my computer?

All computers come with a power cord and battery. However, you will need to purchase Microsoft Office for your computer. This package includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. We offer this at a greatly discounted price.

Can I purchase my computer and have someone else pick it up for me?

Yes. We require written documentation that you are giving someone else permission to pick up your computer. You may e-mail us (techstore@bsu.edu) with the following information: Who you are giving permission to pick up the computer, when the person will pick up the computer, and your contact information in the case of any discrepancy. The person picking up the computer will need to provide a valid photo ID at the time of pick up.
