Unit 4: Legal Aspects

Harassment Prevention Orders

The campus judicial process is separate from the Criminal Justice System.  A victim, who is a student, may file a complaint with the campus as well as with the police department, or chose to report with one and not the other.

A victim advocate’s role in the process is to encourage the victim to make an informed decision based on what will best fit the needs of the client.  The victim advocate must not express ones opinion, but rather educate the client on what will take place in both systems.

All universities have some form of campus judicial process, and a set of codes of conduct for students.   Each university has its own set of policies and procedures, it is the victim advocate’s job to make sure you are informed of the process to properly educate students.

Ball State’s complaint office is called the “Student Rights and Community Standards”
