Choosing a Major or Minor

For some people choosing a major or minor seems like an easy process.  Other people have to wade through layers before finding the right major to meet their career goals.

There are many steps to choosing a major.  The first of which has to do with understanding your personality, interests and motives, values, abilities and aptitudes, as well as your educational and work experiences.  Researching career and occupational options is also an important step after you have found some areas that interest you.  There are many ways to get information about careers and majors including academic departments, the Career Resource Lab in Lucina Hall 235, the online major/career planning collection, and practical experiences like internships, part-time jobs, volunteering through community organizations.

Some of the online tools that you may find helpful as you explore majors and careers are: Quest, Learn More Resource Center, and SIGI PLUS available through the Learning Center.

You can also get on-on-one assistance in understanding how your skills, interests, and values match different majors and careers by scheduling an appointment with the Academic Major/Minor Coordinator in North Quad 324 by calling 765-285-1161.  The Career Center and Counseling Center also provide assistance in career exploration.

Some students may prefer taking special career and life planning courses.  Check with your academic advisor and consult the Undergraduate Catalog for courses in this area.
