Meeting With Your Advisor

Your first registration at Ball State University, whether an entering freshman or a transfer student, requires meeting with an advisor. After that, in keeping with the concept of self-responsibility, there is no formal regulation for meeting with advisors, with some exceptions by departments, and the expectation that freshmen meet once each term. Even so, advising areas make conscientious attempts, through mailings, email, web information, posters and flyers, to keep students aware that meeting with advisors or using resources provided by the Advising Office is of upmost importance in making academic progress toward earning a degree and making the most of the educational opportunities provided by department programs, degrees, and courses.

In the interest of providing a successful Advising experience, Advisors have a few tips to pass along:

Find out who your academic advisor is, and how to contact, early in the term.
You can find the name of your academic advisor on your Degree Works audit or by selecting "Current Degree and Advisor" under the "Student Records" link in Self-Service Banner (SSB).

Using Email and Voice Mail:
Do not use email to try to schedule an appointment. Because of the volume of students, we cannot efficiently use email conversations for scheduling appointments. However, students are welcome to use email to filter questions or for immediate priority situations. Also, advisors will assume that you will check your Ball State email account for timely information. Send email in a professional way by including a subject and enough detail to help get a professional response. If you leave a voice mail message, be clear and leave your name and return number.

Make the Appointment Time a Priority
Record the date and time and location (ask directions when you make the appointment if needed). Be on time. Be prepared by bringing a list of your questions and concerns, and review any materials the advisor has asked you to. Be considerate of cell phone use. Call to cancel if you can’t make it or are sick. We understand that reschedules are sometimes necessary.

Don’t Procrastinate
This is a number one best tip for you. All advisors get busy in high priority times like Course Request periods and the beginning of change of course. Call early to make sure you have a choice of times and have left time for follow up appointments if needed.

Assume Resonable Responsibility
You are responsible for using the Catalog, the DegreeWorks degree audit; and being familiar with the University Core Curriculum.
