About Us

The Center for Media Design at Ball State University is a research and development facility focused on the creation, testing, and practical application of digital technologies for business, classroom, home, and community. These efforts are accomplished through the Digital Exchange initiative—a program that explores how digital technology can drive innovative communication in both the classroom and the workplace.

CMD engages in multidisciplinary digital media research and content development projects that explore how digital technology will touch the way we live, learn, work, and play. Through collaborations with industry professionals, government leaders, and talented academic partners, we carry out this mission by:
  • generating a national model for innovative education in the digital media arts and sciences
  • establishing a national digital media research and consultation agenda
  • stimulating media-related industry growth in the state of Indiana through partnerships geared toward creating new products and business opportunities
We pursue these goals through an established Insight and Research unit and our immersive learning institutes.

The Center for Media Design was originally established through a $20 million Lilly Endowment grant for an initiative called iCommunication. A second $20 million Lilly Endowment award was given to Ball State and the Center for Media Design in December 2005 for the new Digital Exchange initiative.
