The roots of Ball State's expertise in emerging media trace to the pioneering
Middletown Media Studies project funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc. and carried out by the
Center for Media Design in 2005 and 2006. For the first time, the study directly measured the media habits of average consumers in a typical American community.
However, some Ball State faculty members have many more years of experience with various aspects of emerging media—from the use of digital scanning technology to
reduce industrial waste and the potential of virtual worlds as
viable learning environments to the added value of 3-D visualization in the medical operating room and the possible next big advance in
wireless broadband access.
