The roots of Ball State's expertise in emerging media trace to the pioneering project funded by the Lilly Endowment Inc. and carried out by the Center for Media Design in 2005 and 2006. For the first time, the study directly measured the media habits of average consumers in a typical American community.

In fall 2009, the Emerging Media Initiative provided incentives and start-up funding to hire the inaugural group of Emerging Media New Faculty Fellows. The fellows, who represent departments across the curriculum, demonstrate expertise in the use and study of emerging media in their discipline, and serve as liaisons between EMI and their home departments.
