Geographic Information Systems

Our students and faculty have access to GeoMedia ProfGISMapessional, software that collects and maintains GIS (geographic information systems) data.

With GeoMedia Pro, students use a spatially organized database to identify patterns on the earth. Urban planners and other professionals use the technology to better allocate resources necessary to support our population.

This leading-edge tool is available thanks to the generosity of engineering and geospatial software provider Intergraph Corp., which in 2008 donated 500 copies of the software to Ball State. The total value of the software is $4.2 million.

"GeoMedia Pro gives students a resource to learn a technology that's becoming increasingly prevalent," said David Schoen, a faculty member in the Department of Urban Planning. "They can hit the ground running in the job market."
