Advocacy in Action
The Guardian Scholars program at Ball State University and Ivy Tech State College is committed to helping former foster youth access the services they need to meet their educational goals.
The lack of adequate medical insurance has been identified as a barrier for many of our students. Recently, two of our Guardian Scholars went to Indianapolis to advocate for House Bill 1711. This bill requires the office of Medicaid policy and planning to apply for an amendment to the state Medicaid plan and, if necessary, apply for a Medicaid waiver to provide services to individuals who are at least 18 years of age but less than 22 years of age and are or have been in foster care.
Thanks goes out to two of our Guardian Scholars, for their generous donation of time and dedication to improving policies that could affect all Indiana students in foster care. The event was organized by the Children's Bureau and attended by many advocates of all ages.
