Participating in one of our many activities is a great way for you to get hands-on experience and apply what you’re learning in the classroom.
In 2011-2012, the Peace Center has been promoting peace and understanding through sports, both locally and abroad. In the fall, board member Dr. Lindsey Blom (Assistant Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology) teamed up with Dr. Lawrence Gerstein (Director of the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies and Professor of Counseling Psychology) to offer a "sport for peace" program for 4th and 5th graders at Longfellow Elementary School in Muncie. In January, Dr. Blom and Dr. Gerstein lead a team to Jordan to begin a "Soccer for Peace and Understanding" exchange program.
Last year BSU students teamed up with Muncie's Rotary Club to ride in the fundraising relay, Pedal for Peace. Over $50,000 was raised and will be split between Greg Mortenson's (auth
or of Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools) Central Asia Institute (CAI) and Bibi Barhami's AWAKEN. Ball State had the largest team with 37 riders. (Right: Pedal for Peace participants hanging out at the event)
In addition to painting, you can participate in meditation classes where you will learn how to heighten your mental clarity, relieve stress, and become more in tune with the world around you. Our Brown Bag lunch series is a great way to hear from a diverse background of speakers on a variety of topics. We’ve had speakers with military background to Fulbright scholars engage students, faculty, and the community on their respective topics about conflict and peace.
These are just a few examples of what the center has to offer. We also have a Muncie Interfaith Fellowship and the Social Justice League, which may be of interest to you.
