Graduate Students

Applicants for the MA or MFA degree programs in art at Ball State must meet the admission requirements of the university's Graduate School and then be formally admitted by the Department of Art. To be considered for an assistantship for the following academic year, students must submit their application by February 15 (or the first business day after) for the MFA program or March 31 (or the first business day after) for the MA program .

Admission Criteria

Students applying for admission to the graduate program must have an undergraduate degree in art and a grade point average in art courses of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale, and they must pass a review by the Department of Art's graduate committee. The department has no admission quotas by race, gender, state of residence, or expressed discipline preference.

Students should also review the Graduate School admission requirements.

How to Apply for the MA Program
Due dates: March 31 (or the first business day after).
Interested students must submit an application for admission to the Graduate School and provide the following items to the Department of Art:

  • Letter expressing goals in pursuing the degree 
  • Current resume 
  • Transcripts for all college-level course work 
  • Portfolio of artwork in CD format 
  • Three letters of recommendation 
  • Supportive material such as research and publications

How to Apply for the MFA Program
Due date: February 15 (or first business day after)
Interested students must submit an application for admission to the Graduate School, bachelor's degree in Art from an accredited college or university with at least a 2.75 GPA on a 4.0 scale or have a 3.0 GPA in the last two years of study, and provide the following items to the Department of Art: 

  • Letter expressing goals in pursuing the degree 
  • Current resume 
  • Transcripts for all college-level course work 
  • Portfolio of artwork in CD format 
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Supportive material such as research and publications
