After completing the biotechnology certificate at Ball State, you might be hired as a research associate or into a quality control position by pharmaceutical or agricultural companies, academic institutions, or government agencies. Employers of recent graduates include Eli Lilly & Co., Roche Diagnostics, Dow AgroSciences, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Research Foundation, Indiana University-Purdue University, the Indiana State Police, the Medical University of South Carolina, Harvard Medical School, Notre Dame University, and the Department of Homeland Security.
Increasingly, graduates of our program are being accepted into doctoral or professional programs to continue their studies, including the molecular and developmental biology graduate program at the University of Cincinnati, the Department of Biology at Cornell University, and the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine.
The certificate may be earned in conjunction with a master of science (MS), master of arts (MA), bachelor of arts (BA), or as a stand-alone certificate. Because class sizes are kept at an enrollment of 16, you will enjoy close interactions with faculty and you can expect to develop expertise in working with techniques, equipment, and reagents commonly in use in research facilities. Most students become involved in exciting and current research projects. In addition to strong institutional support of the biotechnology certificate program, regional and national institutions, including Dow AgroSciences, Roche, Origene, and Eli Lilly & Co., generously have provided equipment, expendables, and reagents.
In addition to the technology-based courses offered to you in this program, you will enroll in a professional development course in which you will compile a curriculum vitae, view and self-assess individually recorded mock-interviews, and meet with professionals from the biotechnology field. The capstone of the certificate program is an internship requirement that provides you with access to companies and academic institutions that commonly hire upon graduation.
In our program, you will work with faculty with up-to-date research skills and who have received funding awards through Ball State, state agencies, the Discovery Group, LI-COR, and the National Institutes of Health as Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) grants. These awards have enabled the acquisition of modern equipment and technology for your use in this program.
