How to Apply

  1. You must apply to the Ball State Graduate School by submitting a completed application form, application fee, and official transcripts at least four weeks before the term you plan to begin study. You may apply online.
  2. You must apply to the Department of Biology by submitting the following:
    • A completed application
    • Three recommendations (PDF)
    • The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is not required. However, scores are included in the evaluation of applications for assistantships. If submitting scores, submit by the month of March that precedes the term you plan to begin study.

  3. If you started the Biotechnology Program as an undergraduate and are completing the Biotechnology Certificate as a graduate student or if you are applying for the Biotechnology Program for the first time, the following must be done in addition to the requirements listed above:  Visit the GRADUATE SCHOOL APPLY NOW webpage. Select “Certificate Only” then select “Biotechnology”. The cost for this application through CollegeNet is $20. You will need to complete the Biotechnology Certificate application as an entirely separate application from that for the MA/MS. You will need to log on twice, once for the MA/MS application, the second for the Biotechnology Application. Two separate fees will be charged.
    • VERY IMPORTANT – in the application for the Biotechnology Certificate on the last page of the application, state in the COMMENT BOX that you are ADDING the certificate to your current MASTER’S curriculum (to ensure the Graduate School keeps the Master’s curriculum in place, as well).
    • After doing this, periodically, log in and review your curriculum programs through Self Service Banner to ensure that both programs (the Master’s and Certificate programs) are listed (once the admission has taken place).
    • If you have not already done so, you will need to apply to the Biotechnology Program through the Biology website as well (no fee). If you had applied to the Biotechnology Program through the Biology website as an undergraduate and had been accepted, there is no need to reapply at the Biology website but MUST do the 2 CollegeNet applications (the Biotechnology Certificate application and the MA/MS application) as described above.
    • If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Director of the Biotechnology Program, Dr. Susan McDowell (

If you are an international student, you must submit an application through the Rinker Center for International Programs.

Applications for assistantships will be reviewed beginning February 1 and continue until all positions are filled. To be fully considered for an assistantship, you should have your application materials in by this date.
