Selection Criteria

The College of Architecture and Planning strives to admit students who have demonstrated excellent scholarship and promise to be high achievers in the college’s programs. There is no magic formula for making this determination, no minimum academic standard that guarantees admission—what matters is how competitive your application is within the applicant pool in a given year.

In general, however, the majority of students admitted tend to be in the top 20 percent of their high school class, and they typically have SAT composite scores of at least 1120, or an ACT score of 24. As for transfer students, the most competitive applicants have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

The admissions committee will review all submitted materials and consider the following:

  • Demonstrated excellence in scholarship, as documented by all submitted transcripts including SAT or ACT scores
  • Evidence of initiative, leadership experience, and interest in the environmental design and planning disciplines, as indicated on the supplemental application form
  • The quality of the application essay

A personal interview is not required, and neither is a portfolio. However, given the competitive nature of the application process, a portfolio is highly recommended in order to demonstrate to the CAP admissions committee your potential for achievement within the college.
