This project initiates implementation of the site’s resource balance management model. This model seeks to ensure that site management results in site systems and resources maintain a positive balance (resource is as healthy and productive after intervention as it was prior to intervention). The model implements monitoring of site Indicators as a feedback system to make sustainable land management, use, and planning decisions. This management model includes life-cycle based data-maps (incident radiation, biomass, and so on), productive potential maps (potential for production of food, energy, clean air, material resources, and so on), and eco-balancing methods (balancing upstream and downstream productive potential) to facilitate sustainable decisions. It includes a feedback system of ecological baselines, desired performance benchmarks, and environmental monitoring of sustainability indicators to assess the degree to which solutions traject, over time, toward performance benchmarks. This EPA project uses this information-flow system of resource-balancing design, environmental monitoring, and comparison of environmental performance to targeted benchmarks -- as a process for modeling sustainable decisions, making site management decisions, confirming the efficacy of these decisions, and when necessary evolving decisions to promote greater sustainability.
