Bruce Race, FAIA, FAICP, PhD is the principal and founder of RACESTUDIO and is responsible for all aspects of project planning, design, and delivery. Since founding RACESTUDIO in Berkeley, CA in 1994, RACESTUDIO’s projects have received 32 awards including national awards from the American Planning Association, American Institute of Architects, Environmental Protection Agency, and Society for College and University Planning. The number and variety of awards for Dr. Race’s projects reflects his engaging and interdisciplinary approach to working with communities. His designs and plans are popular with communities because they capture the public’s aspirations and with the profession because of their innovation and comprehensiveness.

Dr. Race is active in professional design and planning organizations as an instructor and leader. He has presented at over 100 conferences. On behalf of the American Planning Association (APA), Dr. Race co-authored a book providing planners and educators case studies and methods for getting young people involved in the planning process. Dr. Race served on the American Institute of Architect’s (AIA’s) Board of Directors and is currently a member of the AIA’s Regional Urban Design Committee.

Dr. Race is the Associate Professor of Practice and a full-time faculty for Ball State University’s Master of Urban Design program in Indianapolis. His design talent, practice experience and research interests intersect in his classroom studios where he emphasizes design innovation grounded by real world experience. In addition to teaching at Ball State, Dr. Race is a visiting research fellow, faculty in MA in Urban Design program, and instructor in the Low Carbon Architecture Summer Program with Cardiff University’s Welsh School of Architecture.

Bruce Race is one of very few planning and design professionals in the United States that have been elected to fellowship by both the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) and American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP). In 2012, Dr. Race received the Planning Sagamore from APA Indiana recognizing his accomplishments “as a model planner before the public and the planning profession.”

Bruce Race is the urban design columnist for the Indianapolis Business Journal.
