Les has a particular expertise and design niche in equestrian facility planning and design.  Les has designed numerous equestrian venues throughout the USA, and most notably, he assisted in the design for the (Atlanta) Olympic Cross Country Course and equestrian venue facilities in 1996.
As the role model for the design-build program, Les integrates students into this aspect of the profession by helping them design, engineer, and construct community service projects (on-campus and off-campus).
As a designer, Les is noted for his experimental design processes that emphasize the “art” aspects in landscape architecture – artful thinking to result in artful design outcomes. He promotes the use of metaphor and figurative expressions in design to enrich the functional needs and outcomes in project work.
Les is also in charge of coordinating, detailed design, and construction of the annual exhibit at the Indiana State Fair, which highlights students’ designs and promotes the “Ball State Backyard”. It includes a quarter-acre indoor representation of a garden-plaza space, including bridges, boardwalks, water features, decks and full plantings formed with innovative layouts and geometries.
Recently, Les was appointed to a three-year term by the Governor to the Indiana State Board of Professional Licensing for Architects and Landscape Architects
