1980s Architecture Graduates

Thomas H. Engle (BArch ’81) has been named a partner in the Indianapolis firm of Barnes & Thornburg.

Donald Flick (BArch ’83) of Pyramid Architecture/Engineering has been named as a board member of the Indiana Medical History Museum.

Joe Vance (BArch ’84) started his firm Joseph Vance Architects in 1991, in Brooklyn, New York. Their work is a combination of residential development—converting manufacturing buildings to residential, rooftop additions and ground-up buildings and high-end luxury interior renovations.

Thomas P. Kerwin, AIA (BArch ’86)—The Shanghai Planning Bureau, recently awarded the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP first place in a worldwide competition to create an environmentally-friendly urban master plan for Chongming Island, a 750 square-mile island at the mouth of the Yangtze River in Shanghai, China.  Under the SOM plan, three new cities and transportation infrastructure will be created on the rapidly growing, 600,000 resident island. Meanwhile, wetlands, forests, endangered plants and rare species, and agriculture would be preserved. Chongming Island, one of five municipal districts of Shanghai, has been identified by the Shanghai government as a model project for sustainable development and environmental stewardship in China.

Ernesto Cercas (BArch ’84) is living in Miami, Florida. He has been self-employed since 1995, the majority of his business is in the hospitality and health care market.

Kevin Davies (BArch ’88) is living in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, and working in Akron for GPD Group.

James L. Houser (BArch ’82) is living in Fort Worth, Texas, and working at Jensen Commercial Inc.

Catherine Maxeiner Demmitt (BArch ’83) Charlotte, North Carolina, joined BSA LifeStructures (new Charlotte office) as a consultant on the New Hanover Regional Medical Center Life Safety Project while being a sole practitioner for the past seven years specializing in nonprofit facility work, health care, etc.
