The College of Architecture and Planning’s DesignWorks is open to high school students of all backgrounds and professional interests. Applicants must have completed their sophomore or junior year of high school and in general must be ranked in the top 20 percent of their high school class and have a grade point average of 3.0 (B) or better on a 4.0 scale. Or, they should have a combined PSAT score of 1100 and a GPA of 3.0 (B) or better on a 4.0 scale.
Students who don’t meet these criteria may still apply, but they may be asked to submit supporting materials such as a portfolio or a letter of recommendation from a teacher.
What It Costs
The fee for DesignWorks is $1,200. The fee includes all instruction and documentation, housing, linens, meals and snacks, and materials as well as transportation and entrance fees for field trips. The fee does not include transportation to and from campus, although transportation to and from the Indianapolis International Airport can be arranged at an additional cost.
Dining services are provided on the campus, and a meal plan is part of the cost. The meal plan works on a debit basis, starting with a balance that will cover the meals a typical student would choose. More food is available—the dining service accepts cash and credit cards for expenses beyond the meal plan.
For students needing financial assistance, a fee reduction may be requested in writing and may be granted based on demonstrated need as long as funds are available.
How to Apply
The 2014 DesignWorks application materials are available here. You will also need to submit an official copy of your high school transcript, a nonrefundable application fee of $35 (payable by check made out to Ball State University), and a current passport-size photo. Apply early—this workshop fills up quickly. Send the application and requested materials to the mailing address listed below or via email to Melanie Smith.
For your convenience, we have two payment options. You may pay via major credit card or check. If paying by check, make it payable to Ball State University and include the student's name in the notation line. Checks can be mailed to the address below.
Credit card users will have access to an online payment system. Students who have completed their application materials and have been admitted will receive information in their acceptance letter with details of how to pay via credit card.
