One of the true strengths of our program at the Center for Information and Communication Sciences (CICS) is the opportunities for real-world experience. Our Applied Research Institute (ARI) is a major vehicle for delivering that experience. It has been part of the university since 1987 and has been a significant link to the corporate world for support as well as valuable human connections.
Within ARI are six industry-supported laboratories—Convergence, Networking, Digital Media, Applications, Wireless Innovation, and the Network Integration Center. The latter two spend most of their time focusing on research projects sponsored by industry or government, while the other four are dedicated mainly to supporting the graduate academic program.
Five of our institutes work under the ARI umbrella, or in close association with ARI. Within these institutes, faculty provide leadership and offer additional real-world opportunities to apply knowledge from the classroom.
The Human Factors Institute focuses on the impact of a good interface and the need to develop systems that can be easily used.
The Institute of Wireless Innovation recognizes the ever more important role played by wireless technologies in voice, data, and video communications.
The Software Testing Institute tests the functionality, performance, and usability of software, web applications, and web sites.
The CICS Internetworking Academy focuses on the setup, management and troubleshooting of multiple vendor networks. The CICS Internetworking Academy is also the CISCO Area Training Center (CATC) for the state of Indiana. As such, all networking academy instructors in the state are trained at the Center for Information and Communication Sciences.
The Digital Policy Institute is an interdisciplinary association of faculty within CICS and other units throughout campus who share a collective research interest in the structure of, and competition within, electronic communications industries and the public policy of digital information creation, storage, transmission, reception, and consumption in the 21st century.
