Student and Faculty Awards and Accomplishments

Senior chemistry student Sahba Charkzarrin won the nationally-recognized and prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. Only 321 were awarded nationwide.

The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,035 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.

Sahba is chemistry major and a biology major who has worked with our biochemistry faculty S. Pattison and K. Parra as an undergraduate researcher. This summer he is doing an internship at Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis.

One of our alumna, Sara Sorrell was a finalist for the international Gates Cambridge Scholarship for graduate students studying at Cambridge University who want to improve the lives of today’s citizens.

The Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society (ACS) won an Honorable Mention at the National ACS Meeting in New Orleans for recognition of their service and also won an Outstanding Organization Public Service Award from the Ball State Student Voluntary Services.

Our faculty members have a long history of being outstanding teachers. In 2008 two faculty members, Scott Pattison and Patricia Lang, were among the 10 finalists for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Lang was selected as one of the winners and taught “The Chemistry of Artists’ Pigments” as her dream course in the spring 2009.  In 2010, Tykhon Zubkov also received the Excellence in Teaching Award.  The department is proud of his accomplishments and he is able to pursue his dream course "Nanomaterials: The Chemistry Perspective" in the Spring of 2011.
