Recently, the first year competitors of the Ball State speech team, as well as members of the speech team immersion project, traveled to Kansas for the 28th annual Novice National Tournament. A total of 35 schools competed at the national tournament, including Florida State University, Berry College, Hastings College, and University of Indianapolis.

Ball State placed third overall in team sweepstakes at the national tournament. It was truly inspiring to see the immersive learning students and the speech team students bond throughout the experience. As one of the coaches stated to the students, “We couldn’t teach you to love speech. It was something you had to learn for yourself.”

By the time of competition, we were all referring to the students collectively as members of the speech team. Below is a list of individual results:

Haley Armstrong: 4th place informative speaking, 5th place poetry interpretation
Beka Fehrman: 2nd place informative speaking
Rizzie Fisher: 6th place duo interpretation
Jenika Garetson: 5th place communication analysis
Katie Johnson: semifinalist prose interpretation
Meg Moshe: 5th place persuasive speaking, semifinalist impromptu speaking
Whitney Scott: 6th place duo interpretation
