Professor of athletic training and chair of the School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science Since coming to Ball State in 1991, Tom Weidner has served as director of the athletic training education program and director of the Athletic Training Education Research Laboratory before becoming chair of the School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise. He earned his Ph.D. in health education from Southern Illinois University, where he worked as men’s assistant athletic trainer. He later served as director of the athletic training education program at California State University Northridge. During his career, Weidner has received numerous grants and has published and presented widely. His research on upper respiratory illness and its effect on exercise and athletic performance is benchmark research in the world and has been cited frequently in Runner’s World, Self, McCall's, The Washington Post, The London Times, The Wall Street Journal, the New England Journal of Medicine Newsletter, the Berkeley Wellness Newsletter, and on Dateline NBC. His clinical education research figures prominently in the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accreditation standards. Based on his years of research and leadership in athletic training clinical education, Weidner compiled a textbook for clinical instructors, The Athletic Trainer’s Guide to Clinical Teaching. He serves on the board of editors of the Athletic Training Education Journal and was a member of the board of editors of the Journal of Athletic Training for 18 years. He is a member of the Indiana Athletic Trainers’ Association (IATA) hall of fame and was named an inaugural fellow by National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). He has received the NATA’s Most Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award and its Distinguished Educator Award as well as the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers’ Association (GLATA) Distinguished Educator Award.
