How do you rate an English department?
Each time a publication or production arises from one of our graduates, students, and faculty members, it’s recognition of our collaboration, creativity, and discipline.
Every time a student or teacher is better able to articulate an idea because of the guidance of our Writing Center, Writing Program, or Indiana Writing Project, that’s a testament of our quality.
But if you like formal statistics, here are a few:
- In February 2008, both houses of the Indiana legislature passed a resolution commending the Indiana Writing Project, an organization committed to promoting the best possible writing instruction in Indiana’s schools that is based at Ball State and administered through the English department, for our work in improving student performance in writing.
- Each year for the past five years, we have had an increase in the demand for our Writing Center's services and more appointments than the previous year. Students who meet with a tutor are overwhelmingly impressed: 97 percent of students rated their session as excellent or good and 98 percent of students would recommend us to a friend.
- The Writing Center also received the Conference on College Composition and Communication’s (CCCC) Writing Program Certificate of Excellence in 2007.
- Since 2005, 341 undergraduates and 136 graduate students have earned English degrees from Ball State.
