Writing Program

Ball State’s Writing Program is recognized as one of the best in the country. It received the Writing Program Certificate of Excellence in 2007 from the Conference on College Composition and Communication.

The Writing Program emphasizes the rhetorical nature of writing and reading, as well as the importance of inquiry. Begun in the 1960s, the Ball State University Writing Program has evolved into arguably the core of Ball State's University Core Curriculum. Most students take at least two semesters of writing at Ball State; if enrolled in the basic writing program for more writing experience, students take three courses.

The basic writing program is designed to help underprepared students succeed in college. The program consists of ENG 101 and ENG 102: Foundations of Rhetoric and Writing I and II, two semester-long courses that are the equivalent of ENG 103, Rhetoric and Writing. Students who successfully complete ENG 102 go directly into ENG 104, Composing Research. We provide strong support resources for teaching and learning with computers, such as the online version of the Writing Program’s handbook, Ball Point.
