As a generalist, I teach a wide range of courses, many of them for the Honors College, with a special focus on feminist perspectives as applied to what are sometimes called the “Great Books.” Besides the Humanities sequence, I often teach a Global Studies course in literature from non-Western countries.
My research interests are in the area of fairy tales and fantasy, both classic and contemporary. I am particularly interested in British fantasy and have taken two Fantasy Literature classes on field trips to England. A real highlight of my teaching career was the semester I spent as a teacher of British Fantasy Literature and Director of the Ball State London Centre.
Part of my assignment is to serve as Coordinator of the Honors Peer Mentors Program. This program involves overseeing the work of about fifty honors students who volunteer each fall to teach Honors 100, a one-hour course that helps orient first-semester honors students to the program and the campus. I lead a weekly seminar in leadership for the peer mentors and advise and evaluate them on their work.
Areas of specialization Fairy tales and fantasy, Appalachian Literature, women’s writing, peer mentoring
Courses Honors Humanities Sequence (201, 202, and 203), Honors Global Studies, The Art of the Fairy Tale, Journeys in Fantasy Literature, Leadership Seminar (Honors 300).
