Storm Chase Team

The Ball State storm chase team is a group of highly trained and dedicated students who have a passion for extreme weather and community service.

Most of the student members are pursuing the meteorology and climatology option, but if you have a thirst for knowledge of weather, you are free to join.

The students participate in severe storm spotting as a service to the Muncie area and the Delaware County Emergency Management Agency. They provide timely information regarding the state of severe thunderstorms within the local area.

Whenever there are severe local storms that threaten east central Indiana, the Storm Chase Team is deployed. The real-time information from the observations is immediately forwarded to the National Weather Service office in North Webster, Indiana; Indianapolis; Wilmington, Ohio; local civil defense and law enforcement agencies; and local radio and television stations.

When they are not chasing storms, the group participates in these other activities:
  • Adopt-A-Highway
  • field trips to the National Weather Service
  • Forecast Challenges
  • Cosmic Bowling

The group also brings in guest speakers who give real-life accounts of storm chasing, career advice, and answers to any other weather-related questions you may have.

See what other activities the team is involved in by visiting the Storm Chasers Web site.
