Minor in Environmental Geology

Replacement of Minor in Earth and Space Science with a Minor in Environmental Geology

  Department of Geological Sciences, 2010

The Minor in Earth and Space Science was devised to serve teacher education programs, but these programs no longer have place for a minor.  Neither does it provide significant background in a specific secondary specialty area for non-teaching students.  It is appropriate, and well past time, to remove this irrelevant minor program.

In its place we offer another minor option for students in allied majors, focusing on environmental applications of the geological sciences.  While our existing Minor in Geology requires coursework exclusively in Geological Sciences, the new minor includes a required class in Geography or Natural Resources and Environmental Management.  This recognizes the interdisciplinary nature of environmental work, and features courses most commonly taken by our departmental majors planning careers in the environmental industry and related government agencies.   This minor will enhance curriculum options for undergraduate majors in Natural Resources and Environmental Management, Geography, Biology, Chemistry, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and other fields.
