Hands-On and Immersive Learning Opportunities

To learn, you must go beyond the textbooks. At Ball State, you will have several opportunities to immerse yourself in history and social studies.

Through immersive learning, you can team up with students from other majors and make an impact that will last beyond the experience itself. For example, history students were involved in projects to produce documentaries about life along Indiana’s segment of the Historic National Road, the first federally funded highway, and Indiana's 19th century experiment with a utopian community.

Other hands-on experiences include public history internships, teaching internships, and the Annual Student History Conference.

If you are interested in a career in public history—that is, work in museums, historical societies, archives, public agencies such as the National Park Service, and business firms—you may arrange an internship through our Public History Internship program, which includes some paid positions. All internships provide you with credit hours toward your degree as well as invaluable training and experiences.

A growing number of our majors and minors spend a semester or more at Ball State’s London Centre, where we regularly offer classes, and on other study abroad programs throughout the world.
