Javits Fellowships

The Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Program provides financial assistance to students of superior academic ability and achievement, exceptional promise, and financial need who pursue doctoral or other terminal degrees in selected fields of the arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Eligibility

  • Seniors and first-year graduate students who intend to pursue a doctoral or master's degree, if the master's degree is the terminal or highest degree awarded in an approved field, may apply.
  • Applicants must plan on pursuing graduate degrees in the social sciences, arts, or humanities.
  • An applicant must be a U.S. citizen or national, permanent resident of the U.S., or a citizen of any one of the Freely Associated States.
  • Applicants attending a foreign institution are ineligible.
  • Applicants must demonstrate financial need.

How to apply

  • The application is available online.
  • Candidates must submit an applicant information form, transcripts, GRE scores for most fields, a statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, a list of honors and awards, and a certification of eligibility. Candidates in the arts also must submit relevant supporting materials.
  • All candidates must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Applicants do not need to be nominated by Ball State. However, they are strongly advised to work with Barb Stedman, director of national and international scholarships. At least six weeks before the campus deadline--preferably earlier--students should call 765-285-1024 to schedule an appointment, or e-mail scholarships@bsu.edu with questions.

Deadlines

  • Applications must be postmarked by October 5, 2009.
  • The deadline for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is January 31, 2010.

Duration and amount

  • Javits Fellowships provide up to four years of support.
  • The fellowship consists of an institutional payment (accepted by the institution of higher education in lieu of all tuition and fees for the fellow) and a stipend (based on the fellow's financial need, not to exceed $30,000).
