Jack Kent Cooke Scholarships

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Graduate Scholarship Program helps young people of exceptional promise reach their full potential through graduate school. It seeks young people of special intelligence, application, deportment, and character who have financial need and demonstrated excellence in academic endeavors and extracurricular activities.

Another scholarship exists for undergraduate students who have transferred from two-year to four-year institutions. See the Jack Kent Cooke Web site for more information.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be college seniors or recent graduates (since May 2004).
  • Applicants must be accepted into a full-time graduate degree program to pursue a graduate degree or professional degree, including medicine, law, or business. They must be accepted to begin study in fall 2009.
  • Applicants must have a GPA of 3.5 or better.
  • Applicants should have outstanding academic ability and achievement, unmet financial need, the will to succeed, a record of leadership and public service, critical-thinking ability, and appreciation for or participation in the arts and humanities. NOTE: Demonstrating unmet financial need is a major portion of the application process.
  • Students cannot apply directly but must be nominated by the university's faculty representative.

How to apply

  • The application is available online.
  • Candidates must submit an institution nomination form, application form (which includes several essays), financial information forms, transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a copy of the acceptance letter to graduate school, a curriculum vitae or résumé, survey form (optional), and, for "Arts-Performance and Studio" applicants, an arts portfolio (optional).
  • Each candidate must be nominated by Barb Stedman, director of national and international scholarships, for Jack Kent Cooke Scholarships.
  • Each candidate must work with Barb Stedman, director of national and international scholarships, in obtaining the university's nomination. At least six weeks before the campus deadline--preferably earlier--students should call 765-285-1024 to schedule an appointment, or e-mail scholarships@bsu.edu with questions.

Deadlines

  • The deadline for the 2008 competition is March 13, 2009. All materials must be received, not postmarked, by that date.
  • The campus deadline is February 13, 2009. All materials must be submitted by this date to Barb Stedman in the Honors College.

Duration and amount

  • The scholarships cover tuition, room and board, books, and other required fees for length of the graduate degree program, up to six years.
  • The maximum available per student is $50,000 per year.
  • The amount and duration of awards vary by student, based on the cost of attendance and the length of the program as well as other scholarships or grants received. (Scholars must apply for federal and institutional financial assistance every year of study.)
