Admission to the Department of Journalism

In order to be admitted to the undergraduate professional programs within the Department of Journalism, you must have successfully completed the prejournalism sequence.

These five courses provide an introduction to mass communications and the basic journalistic skills upon which your more specialized course work will build. The required courses, in which you must earn a grade of C or better, are:

  • JOURN 101—Introduction to Mass Communications
  • JOURN 102—Information Gathering
  • JOURN 103—Visual Communications and Presentation
  • JOURN 105—Journalism Writing Skills
  • An introductory course specific to the major or sequence you wish to pursue. The courses you may choose from are:
    • JOURN 250 for prospective advertising students
    • JOURN 245 for prospective journalism graphics students
    • JOURN 280 for prospective magazine students
    • NEWS 201 for prospective news-editorial students
    • JOURN 230 for prospective photojournalism students
    • JOURN 261 for prospective public relations students
    • JOURN 230 for prospective secondary education students

You must also complete a department orientation prior to admission to the professional program.

When you are in the final semester of your prejournalism sequence, you should complete the online application to the professional program.
