The Ball State Daily News

Journalism 0122Nothing can prepare students for working at a daily newspaper better than actually working at a daily newspaper. That’s the opportunity provided by the award-winning The Ball State Daily News student newspaper. With a circulation of 14,000, it's published Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters, except during exam periods and school vacations. During the summer semester, it’s published less frequently.

At this newspaper, you’ll have the chance to try your hand and gain experience in a full range of roles, from news reporter to sportswriter to entertainment writer to feature specialist. We have students serving in editor positions, as copy editors, as designers, and as photographers.

While they learn the traditional, printed medium, Daily News students also embrace emerging technology, such as podcasts. Through innovation and high quality, The Ball State Daily News earned recognition by U.S. News and World Report's The Paper Trail, a blog that tracks national campus news. The Paper Trail listed the Daily News' podcasts among the best alternative media outlets in its Best of College Newspapers 2007 poll.

Students also are responsible for maintaining the up-to-the-minute Web version and for cooperating with other electronic media. Producing a newspaper on a daily basis may seem like a daunting task, but you’ll emerge from your experience with the confidence that you can excel in this profession.

The newspaper is supported by advertising as well as the university’s general fund and is available free to students at various locations across campus. Paid and unpaid positions are available to journalism majors as well as other students.
