Few experiences give students more relevant and practical training, self-confidence, and connections than an internship. That’s why we require our journalism, advertising, or public relations students to complete at least one internship before graduation. Not all schools require this, but we want to make sure our majors have benefited from on-the-job experiences.
Our students have had opportunities at a wide range of businesses and institutions, from The Field Museum in Chicago to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis to Maxim magazine in New York to a wide range of newspapers. Though you are responsible for obtaining your own internship, we provide a variety of resources.
Internships typically last 10 weeks, are offered for credit, and are most often completed during the summer following junior year. However, you may complete a noncredit internship at any point in your academic career—many excellent internships go unfilled during the fall or spring semesters, so these can be ideal times for you to land the best internship for your career goals.
Prior to beginning any internship, you’re required to take a one-hour professional development course. Following your internship, you must submit an internship portfolio to receive credit.
