How to Apply

Anyone with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is eligible for admission. To be admitted to the Department of Journalism for a master’s program, you must first be accepted by Ball State’s Graduate School. The journalism department also requires:

  • three recommendations using the department form
  • a current resume
  • transcripts of all previous graduate and undergraduate course work (a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale)
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test results (a minimum score of 500 on the verbal section)
  • a 500-to 1,000-word statement of purpose
  • If you are an international student, request information and an admission application from Ball State’s Rinker Center for International Programs.  You will be asked to demonstrate English proficiency. International students may substitute the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for the GRE and must achieve a minimum score on the TOEFL of 550.
