Professional Experience
Heinen spent 34 years as a Washington, D.C., photojournalist; the first half at the
Washington Star and the last half as a sole proprietor freelance photojournalist, including
serving as a media pool photographer at the U.S. Supreme Court and as a contract photo
editor for National Geographic filmstrips.

His research focus is photojournalism and visual story telling in particular.

Research/ Creative/ Publication Career Highlights
Heinen has three refereed or juried papers dealing with perceptions of women in
photojournalism using Q methodology.

He has more than 50 photography awards including the White House News
Photographers Association 1975 photographer of the year, Washington Art Directors
Club Gold Medal, several Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild first place awards and
National Press Photographers Association College Photographer of the Year. He also has received awards for Top Faculty Research Paper from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication’s Visual Communications Division and Ball State’s College of Communication, Information, and Media Teaching Award in 2001.

Heinen has judged numerous photography competitions including three years as an
Indiana State Fair photography competition judge.

Thesis/ Creative Project Experience and Philosophy
M.A. thesis (1965) examined the careers of the National Geographic photographers
(interviews).

Three women in photojournalism studies done with Dr. Mark Popovich using Q-Sorts
(sampled the views of picture editors, female photographers, and male photographers)
