Rui Chen is an assistant professor of information systems and he joined Ball State University in fall 2009. He holds a bachelor's and master's degree in computer science and a PhD degree in management science and systems from State University of New York at Buffalo. He received the Advanced Certificate in Information Assurance from State University of New York at Buffalo and the National Security Agency. He is also a Microsoft Certified Database Administrator and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer.
His research focuses on information assurance, emergency management, emerging media, IT capability, and IT outsourcing. He has published about 50 research articles in renowned journals, conferences, and books. His journal publications include MIS Quarterly, Journal of the Association for Information Systems, Decision Support Systems, Information Systems Journal, Communications of the Association for Information Systems, and Communications of the ACM. His research articles have been presented at a number of learning information conferences in 7 different countries.
Dr. Chen has actively contributed to the professional community by serving journals, conferences, and books in various capacities such as editor, editorial advisory board member, editorial review board member, program committee member, session chair, and discussant. He has reviewed about 100 research articles for more than 40 publication outlets within the past few years.
His regular teaching assignment is 9 credit hours per semester with two to three course preparations. Since joining the university, he has taught ISOM 135 Business Information Systems, ISOM 228 Advanced Microcomputer Applications for Business, ISOM 313 Databases and Information Resource Management, ISOM 350 E-Commerce Design and Applications, ISOM 410 Information Systems Security, ISOM 497 Independent Study, ISOM 603 Network Designs and Security Concerns, ISOM 604 Security Technologies, MBA 621 Information Systems. He has actively engaged in immersive learning projects and online education as well.
Dr. Chen was nominated for both Outstanding Research Award and Outstanding Teaching Award at Miller College of Business in 2010 and in 2011. He won the New Faculty Start-Up Award and Junior Faculty Research Grant competition at Ball State University. He was awarded the Best Prototype Award of the Workshop on Information Technologies and Systems in 2010 and the Best Paper Nominee of the 10th Annual Global Information Technology Management World Conference in 2009.
