Sushil K. Sharma is a professor and chairperson of the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management at Ball State University, in Muncie, Indiana. He is also the acting director of the Master of Business Administration and Graduate Certificate Program.
Sharma has the distinction of having earned two doctoral degrees—one in management and one in management information systems (MIS). Prior to joining the faculty at Ball State, he held the associate professor position at the Indian Institute of Management (India) and a visiting research associate professor at the Department of Management Science at the University of Waterloo (Canada). He was chair of the Quantitative Systems Group and Information Technology and Systems Department at Indian Institute of Management. Sharma has travelled worldwide and lectured in several business schools around the globe in England, Europe, Australia, Asia and North America.
Sharma has authored more than 150 refereed research papers in many peer-reviewed national and international management and MIS journals, conferences proceedings, books and edited volumes of encyclopedia. His research, primarily involving e-commerce, computer-mediated communications, information systems security, e-government, ERP systems, community and social informatics, human computer interaction (HCI) and knowledge management has appeared in journals such as International Journal of Information Security and Privacy (IJISP), Journal of Information System Security (JISSec), the Journal of International Technology and Information Management (JITIM), Computers & Security, Information Management and Computer Security, International Journal of E-Business Research (IJEBR), Journal of International Technology and Information Management, Journal of Information Privacy & Security, International Journal of Management and Enterprise Development, International Journal of Mobile Communications, International Journal of Information Management, International Journal of Healthcare Technology and Management, Electronic Government Journal, Journal of Electronic Commerce in Organizations, Journal of Global Information Technology Management, the Journal of Computer Information Systems, Journal of Logistics Information Management, International Journal of Management, Electronic Commerce Research Journal, and in numerous books and encyclopedia volumes.
Sharma has earned recognition for his teaching and research and has been a recipient of the Miller College of Business 'Extra Ordinary Year Award' for three consecutive years (2003-2005), Outstanding Researcher of the Year Award at the university level (2006-2007), Outstanding Researcher of the Year at Miller College of Business (2008) and Outstanding Faculty of the Year Award at the university level (2008-2009). Sharma has been the recipient of several research grants, and has also won numerous professional honors. His most co-authored work on computer security won him acclaims and he has a patent pending for this innovative work. His work on 'Cyber Slacking' has also been widely covered by several media and news channels in the United States and has often been interviewed for his work. He is often invited to speak at seminars and colloquia by international professional and academic groups on wide variety of topics such as computer and network security, ERP implementations community and social informatics, human-computer interaction (HCI) and knowledge management.
Sharma has been a co-author of two textbooks: Learning UNIX (1996) and Programming C (1997). He has also been co-editor of seven other books: Software Services for e-Business and e-Society (2009), Handbook of Research on Enterprise Systems (2009), Handbook of Research on Information Security and Assurance (2008), Creating Knowledge-Based Health Care Organizations (2005), Intelligent Enterprises of the 21st Century (2004), E-Business in the 21st Century (2003) and Creating Knowledge Based Organizations (2003).
Sharma currently serves as editor-in-chief of The International Journal of E-Adoption, associate editor for the International Journal of Cases on Electronic Commerce and honorary associate editor for the Advances in Electronic Commerce book series. He has been a reviewer and member of the editorial boards for several national and international journals such as International Journal of Applied Decision Sciences (IJADS), Electronic Journal of Electronic Government, Advances in Electronic Commerce (AEC) book series, Journal of Electronic Commerce in Organizations, International Journal of Finance, International Journal of Cases on Electronic Commerce (IJCEC), and International Journal of Electronic Democracy (IJED).
Sharma has guest edited several journal issues, and has reviewed manuscripts for over a dozen leading MIS journals and conference proceedings including European Journal of Operational Research, IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication, Journal of Strategic Information System and Journal of Systems and Software. He has been a featured keynote speaker for hundreds of professional forums, executive development seminars, and academic conferences; and has been a track and session chair at numerous national and international conferences. He has been a member and chair of dissertation committees for several doctoral students. Sharma has served as a consultant and advisor to numerous companies and organizations including World Bank funded projects.
Sharma has designed and directed a graduate certificate program in information systems security specifically for working information technology professionals. He has taught several graduate and undergraduate courses on variety of subjects including database management, ERP systems (SAP), electronic commerce, information systems security, advanced computer and network security, management information systems, systems analysis and design, distributed data processing systems, computer networking, knowledge management and other information systems related subjects.
Sharma is a member of several professional organizations including Association for Information Systems (AIS), Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Decision Sciences Institute, (DSI), and Information Resources Management Association (IRMA).
