Criteria for Professionally Qualified Faculty Status

Professionally Qualified (PQ) faculty may be full-time or part-time. They may teach either undergraduate or graduate courses.

A. Requirements for initial PQ status

1. Academic preparation: Normally, an earned graduate degree in an area relevant to one’s teaching responsibility is required.
(AACSB Standard: Normally, the academic preparation should consist of a master’s degree in a field related to the area of teaching assignment).

(AACSB Standard: Extensive professional experience that provides intellectual capital that is reasonably comparable to that received from a master’s degree may substitute for the master’s degree requirement. Cases in which faculty members have PQ status without appropriate master’s degrees should be limited.)

2. Professional experience: Normally, a minimum of five years of full-time mid- or upper-level professional experience (or its equivalent part-time) in an area relevant to one’s teaching responsibility in the immediate past seven years. The length and level of experience may be adjusted for those faculty solely teaching lower level courses.
(AACSB Standard: Normally, the professional experience should be relevant to the faculty member's teaching assignment, significant in duration and level of responsibility, and current at the time of hiring.)

B. Requirements for maintaining PQ status

PQ faculty members must maintain currency in the area of their teaching responsibility. This can be demonstrated by doing the following over the immediate past five year period -

Work experience at a significant level of responsibility (or at an appropriate level for those solely teaching lower level courses) in an area related to their teaching responsibilities; or

Engaging in at least five professional development or experiential activities related to their teaching area. Examples of these activities include:
1. Being personally involved in a role of significance in a business enterprise or a not-for-profit organization;
2. Serving on the board of directors of an organization where the faculty’s professional expertise is relevant;
3. Consulting activities with businesses at a level of substance, significance, and duration;
4. Renewing existing and/or obtaining appropriate new professional certifications; attending professional development workshops; or completing continuing education courses;
5. Designing instructional materials and curriculum for, or teaching in executive/continuing education or equivalent programs;
6. Taking additional university coursework or attending faculty development programs;
7. Presenting papers at academic or professional organization meetings, workshops, or seminars;
8. Publishing intellectual contributions such as articles, technical reports, or case studies in professional or trade journals, books and related materials, or conference proceedings; and publishing articles in peer reviewed journals; or creating software;
9. Serving in leadership positions in professional or academic organizations or as editors of appropriate journals, magazines, newspapers, proceedings, and conferences;
10. Doing faculty internships.

C. Failure to Maintain Status

The PQ status is lost five years after initial appointment if the maintenance of status expectations in B above are not met.

(AACSB Standard: PQ status is lost if there is inadequate evidence of contributions in the last five years through learning and pedagogical research, contributions to practice, or discipline-based scholarship. Regardless of their specialty, work experience, or graduate preparation, the standard requires that faculty members maintain their competence through efforts to learn about their specialty and how it is applied in practice. Likewise, faculty members must engage in constant learning activity to maintain currency with their fields’ developing research and theory.)

D. Process for Determining Status

A. Faculty Claim

1. For full-time faculty members who are required to complete an Annual Review each Spring, the faculty member must include in his/her Annual Review his/her claim of current status (AQ, PQ, or Other) and justify that status by appropriate documentation. The faculty member’s claim must be supported by evidence that the faculty member has achieved and maintained the claimed status based on the criteria in this document. Full-time contract faculty members who are neither AQ nor PQ may be subject to termination.

Note: AQ faculty can be classified as PQ faculty if they fail to meet AQ standards but meet PQ standards. PQ faculty can be classified as AQ faculty if they meet AQ standards of the College.

2. For part-time faculty members, the faculty member must complete a form and submit it with his/her initial contract and with each contract renewal. Part-time faculty members who are not AQ or PQ will not be re-appointed.

B. Determination of Status

1. A faculty member’s PQ status will be determined by the Chair of the department to which the faculty member is assigned.

2. Disagreement over the status can be appealed to the Associate Dean; the decision of the Associate Dean will be final.
