The BSU Opera Theatre is one of the triumvirate of great ensembles at Ball State University. A successful music school is judged on three programs: its choral, instrumental and its opera. We at BSU are proud to present 2 full-scale opera productions every season. Our singers are exposed to the finest of operatic repertory, coached and conducted by world-class musicians and are immersed in the real world of grand opera. Recent productions have included Madama Butterfly, Die Zauberflöte, Suor Angelica, Die Fledermaus, Giulio Cesare in Egitto, and this past spring, Mozart's dramatic comedy, Don Giovanni.
April 16-17, 2010, the BSU Opera Theatre presented two performances of Pietro Mascagni's charming opera, L'amico Fritz. In addition, the BSU Opera Theatre maintains an opera workshop program. The opera workshop teaches the fundamentals of stage decorum and prepares the singers for the mainstage productions.
Auditions are held each spring and fall and are open to
all BSU students. On November 20-21, 2009, the opera theatre christened a new addition to its program:
Pocket Opera presented two standing-room only performances of Gian-Carlo Menotti's The Medium. Pocket opera performances are
always free and open to the public. Each fall the Pocket Opera will perform a complete one-act opera in English. Our goal is to provide as many BSU singers as possible the opportunity to perfect their vocal and dramatic craft on the stage with the highest quality operatic productions---at the same time, furnishing Central Indiana with an art form and musical experience for all to enjoy.
