Dr. Karin Hendricks
Assistant Professor of Music Education
Dr. Hendricks holds the PhD in Music Education from the University of
Illinois, the MA in Music Education from Brigham Young University, and both the
BM in Cello Performance and the BA in German Studies from Oberlin. Before
coming to the University of Illinois, Dr. Hendricks enjoyed a successful public
school orchestra career for 13 years in Utah and Idaho. She was named the 2008
Utah “Secondary Teacher of the Year” for the American String Teachers
Association, 2005 “Teacher of the Year” at Logan High School in Utah, and was a
2003 recipient of the United States Presidential Scholar Teacher Recognition
Award. She has served as an orchestra clinician and adjudicator throughout the
United States and has maintained a private cello studio for 24 years, with
students receiving state and national honors. Dr. Hendricks has presented workshops at national
and international conferences, and has papers published or accepted for
publication many national and international journals. She has served in many
local and state educational leadership capacities, including as Orchestra
Vice-President for the Utah Music Educators Association.
Dr. Amelia Kaplan
Associate Professor of Music Composition
Dr. Kaplan comes Ball State University from Oberlin Conservatory of
Music where she taught music composition from 2004-2008. She has also taught at
Columbia College of Chicago, Roosevelt University, and the University of
Chicago. Dr. Kaplan holds a bachelor's degree in physics from Princeton,
graduate degrees in music from the University of Chicago (master's degrees in
Music History & Theory and in Composition; PhD in Music Composition), and
has also studied composition in Italy and in France with leading composers.
Mr. Matthew Lyon
Assistant Professor of Music Performance (Tuba/Euphonium)
Mr. Lyon comes to Ball State from the Chicago area where he has been
Principal Tuba in the Chicago Civic Orchestra for the last two seasons. He holds
degrees in tuba performance from DePaul University (MM) and the University of
Michigan (BM). While in Michigan he was a regular substitute with the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra and was also principal tuba in several regional orchestras.
Mr. Lyon has held teaching positions at the University of Windsor (Canada) and
the Flint Institute of Music (MI), in addition to serving as an adjunct teacher
in several middle and high school instrumental music programs.
Dr. Aryn Day Sweeney
Assistant Professor of Music
Performance (Oboe)
Prize winning
oboist Aryn Day Sweeney holds degrees from The University of Southern California (B.M.); Rice University (M.M.); and The University of Michigan (D.M.A.). Her recent recording entitled, Les Illuminations,
is currently available on ITunes and through CD Baby. She has performed with
several prominent artists including Zubin Mehta, Jeffery Tate, Peter Schreir,
and members of the Dallas Symphony, Houston Symphony, and the Cleveland
Orchestra. As well as giving solo recitals throughout the United States and
England, she has been a featured performer on CBC Radio 2, a 2008 Kia Borrego
commercial, and performed as principal oboe in the Rocky Mountain PBS
presentation of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Dr. Sweeney has been on the
faculties of East Tennessee State University, Mesa State College, Idyllwild
Summer Arts Festival, Wayne State University and Wayne Community College. She
has given guest recitals at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign,
Florida State University, University of Florida, University of Central Florida,
University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Bowling Green State University and
the University of Eastern Kentucky.
Dr. Elias Goldstein
Assistant Professor of Music Performance
(Viola)
Elias Goldstein is the 2nd prize winner at the Primrose
International Viola Competition and recently made his Russian debut with the
Moscow Soloists and the New Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra under Alexander
Slatkovsky. He took second prize at the Bashmet International Viola
Competition, and was also a top prizewinner of the Lionel Tertis International
Viola Competition in 2010. He has also won top and special prizes at the
Andrews University International String Competition, and the Watson Forbes
International Viola Competition in 2009. He holds degrees from DePaul
University (M.M.) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (D.M.A.) where he was
a Collins Fellow. He has appeared as a soloist with the DePaul Symphony
Orchestra, where he won the annual concerto competition twice, and has
performed as guest concertmaster with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. He is
the first prize-winner of the Leonard Sorkin Memorial Violin Competition and is
the former Wisconsin State Fiddle Champion. He was a winner of the Neale-Silva
Young Artist Competition, and has since made solo recital appearances on
Wisconsin Public Radio. He has played with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra in
Norway and with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He is a founding
member and principal violist of the Advent Chamber Orchestra. He has also been
a regular member of the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra.
Ms. Amy Rempel
Instructor of Music Performance (Jazz Piano)
Canadian pianist and composer Amy Rempel comes to Ball State University
from Wellington, New Zealand where she is active as a performer and teacher,
and is a DMA candidate at the New Zealand School of Music. In 2009, she
was appointed Adjunct Lecturer of Jazz Piano at the Indiana University Jacobs
School of Music where she holds a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies and
was awarded the Performers Certificate recognizing her outstanding Masters
recital. During completion of her degree, she studied with Luke Gillespie,
David Baker, Pat Harbison, Brent Wallarab, and Reiko Neriki. Amy completed her
undergraduate degree in Jazz Piano Performance at the University of Memphis
Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music in December 2006. Amy is the winner of a
Downbeat Magazine Student Music Award, the Indiana University Jacobs
Scholarship, and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra New Music Festival and Manitoba
Music Educators Young Composer contests. She has been invited to the Ravinia
Festival Steans Institute for Young Artists in Chicago and has performed with
David Baker's Indiana University Jazz Orchestra, the Midcoast Swing Orchestra,
the Memphis Jazz Orchestra, and the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra. Her trio with
Jeremy Allen and Jason Tiemann will make their recording debut this summer with
the CD release, Chatter.
Mr. Han-Jui Chen
Instructor of Music Performance (Double Bass)
A
native of Taiwan, Han-Jui Chen has performed in more than 10 countries over
five continents. Mr. Chen is currently finishing his DMA degree in the School
of Music of University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana and is assistant principal
of Sinfonia da Camera. Mr. Chen holds Masters Degree from DePaul University,
where he studied with Robert Kassinger, bassist with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra
and was appointed to the Civic Orchestra of Chicago as co-principal. In his
native Taiwan, he was the principal at the Ministry of National Defense
Symphony Orchestra for two years. Mr. Chen is the winner of the 2008 DePaul University
Concerto Competition in Chicago, and a semi-finalist of the International
Society of Bassists solo competition. Han-Jui Chen has also won numerous
national competitions in Taiwan such as the first prize of the Taiwan National
Music Competition, winner of the Tainan National University of the Arts Concerto
Competition, and prize-winner of the Young Musician String Instruments Awards
in Taiwan.
