The department has led several field studies to Costa Rica. Our groups have studied the management of tropical rainforests, wildlife, energy and agricultural resources. Sites of study have included the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Guanacaste National Park on the Pacific coast, and Limon and other sites along the Atlantic coast.
The department has led field studies to study both cultural and natural resources of central and western Europe. Our tours have brought us through southern Germany, Austria, and Poland.
Many students on the American Southwest Field Study have gained an appreciation for natural resource management in arid climates and the need for water conservation. Students have explored some of the premiere national parks that the United States has to offer.
Melissa Squirlock’s Trip to South Africa
The trip to South Africa was a field study with Biology, Dr. Kamal Islam as instructor. Melissa’s trip was separated into three main portions though it lasted May 7-24. Ecolife Expeditions, endorsed by the Center for Wildlife Management of the University of Pretoria, was the group’s contact in South Africa.

Past participants have taken a tour of Prince William Sound (site of the Exxon Valdez accident), engaged in field ecology tours, visited sites of archaeological interest, observed gold mining sites, and explored Chugach National Forest and Denali National Park.
