Assistantships are available for students studying either Physiology or Health Science.

Physiology Graduate Assistants

Objective
Graduate assistantships provide qualified students with an opportunity to develop their professional skills while providing support to the department as it fulfills mission.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assisting professors with undergraduate courses and laboratories 
  • Providing administrative support for professors teaching large sections of undergraduate courses in anatomy and physiology 
  • Assisting professors as a research assistant or service assistant 
  • Assisting with related departmental activities

Workload and other Expectations
Graduate assistants are expected to provide a total of 20 hours per week of service to the department. The distribution of these hours will be determined on a semester by semester basis by the Department Chairperson, with input coming from faculty members.

Graduate assistants are expected to attend the graduate school orientation conference, department orientation meetings, and any special department meetings. Graduate assistants are encouraged to attend all department sponsored seminars and guest lectures and are encouraged, but not required, to attend department social functions. Graduate assistants are expected to handle department equipment in a safe and professional manner, keep laboratory and classroom doors locked when not in use, and to maintain their offices in good order. Graduate students are expected to follow the Graduate Assistant Code of Conduct that appears in the Department of Physiology and Health Science's Code of Operation.

Selection
Graduate assistants must complete the Graduate Application form from the Graduate School, as well as the Application for Graduate Admission to the Department of Physiology and Health Science. The Department Graduate Assistant Selection Committee will review all applications. This committee will make its recommendations to the Department Chairperson who will then make the final selections and offer assistantship contracts.

For applicants for graduate assistantships in anatomy and physiology, an undergraduate major or minor in biology or zoology is preferred. A minor in chemistry is strongly recommended. Graduate assistants must have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (B) on a 4.0 scale.

For applicants for graduate assistantships in health science, an undergraduate major or minor in health education, health promotion, or related health field, is required. All graduate assistants must have an undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 (B) or higher on a 4.0 scale.

Supervision
Graduate assistants will be supervised by the faculty members to whom they are assigned. While faculty members will determine the frequency of supervisory contact with the graduate assistants, faculty members will be available for consultation during regular office hours or as needed.

Evaluation/Renewal/Termination

Evaluation
Graduate assistants will be evaluated on an individual basis by the faculty members to whom they are assigned. Unsatisfactory evaluations will be referred to the Department Chairperson who will then meet in conference with the graduate assistant and his or her faculty supervisor. At this time, strategies for improvement in performance will be determined.

Renewal
The assistantship contract reads that the "continuance of the assistantship into the next and subsequent semesters depends on the maintenance of a 3.0 cumulative graduate grade point average [3.2 for doctoral assistants] and favorable reports of your work by your supervisor."

Any graduate assistant who wishes to be considered for an extension of his or her assistantship for a second academic year must indicate this desire in writing to the Department Chairperson by February 15 of the first year. No formal re-application is required. Graduate assistantships for Master's degrees are not renewable beyond the second year.

Termination
Graduate assistants who repeatedly (a) fail to perform their duties in a satisfactory manner or (b) fail to follow the guidelines of the Graduate Assistant Code of Conduct may be terminated. This action will be left to the discretion of the Department Chairperson with the advice and counsel of the faculty supervisor. Graduate assistants are reminded that they are hired by the University through the Department and serve at the discretion of the University, Department, and Department Chairperson.

Stipends
Full-time assistantships with competitive stipends for the academic year plus three semesters of tuition waivers are available. Students are responsible for the Dedicated fee, Technical fee and Health Center fee.

Other
By accepting the offer of a graduate assistantship, the student agrees to (a) adhere to all of the guidelines stated in this document, (b) abide by the Department Graduate Assistant Code of Conduct (see page 8-3). It is imperative that the Graduate Assistant Code of Conduct be reviewed and kept on file by each graduate assistant. Students pursuing the Masters degree will have preference for graduate assistantships over students pursuing the Ed.D. degree.
