Major in Health Science (Community Health Education)

Department Major in Health Science (57 hrs)

The primary focus of the program is to prepare students for entry-level jobs as community health educators. In addition to the basic courses that all majors must take, each student must select four additional courses that will help him or her prepare for a specific career setting. It is also a SABPAC (SOPHE-AAHE Baccalaureate Program Approval Committee) approved program of study.

A minor is recommended for this program. Minors often selected include gerontology, counseling psychology, public health, and business administration.

Successful completion of the health science program can prepare graduates for jobs in community health education. The primary career settings in which most students are placed include health agencies, health care facilities (hospitals, clinics, nursing homes), health insurance agencies (HMO/managed care), and business/industry work sites.

Students will be guided by the outline of baccalaureate degrees of the Ball State Undergraduate Catalog, the University Core Curriculum, and the Health Science program. Please pay close attention to prerequisites - if you register for a course but have not successfully completed its prerequisite, you will be dropped from the class.

An internship with an approved health agency or educational institution is required for majors and minors. This professional experience takes place under the supervision of the academic advisor and the agency administrator for a period of time commensurate with academic credit.

To graduate in four years (8 semesters), students must average over 17 credits  per semester and complete the internship (HSC 479) during the last semester of senior year.
